Families of fallen firefighters as well as families whose loved ones still carry on their professional commitments to saving lives and property across Nevada met today in Carson City. The 2019 Nevada Firefighters’ Memorial featured the names of four former firefighters who served many years on their respective fire departments all of whom trained and worked alongside new as well as veteran professionals.
During the commemoration of the lives recently lost, Memorial Chaplain Ruth Hanusa celebrated their lives, reminding everyone that God loves all of his earthly creatures just as firefighters do what is humanely possible to save lives caught up in house fires or horrific traffic crashes.
Reverend Hanusa said God’s universal love for the Earth is clearly reflected in the hearts and minds of firefighters committed to their fellow human beings.
Four new memorial plaques were added to the wall of the Nevada State Firefighter’s Memorial:
* Leroy Leavitt, Las Vegas Fire & Rescue
* Thelonious Adams, Las Vegas Fire & Rescue
* David Croston, Clark County Fire Department, and
* Tim Lucich, Truckee Meadows Fire Protection District.
Following the honoring of the fallen, The Nevada Fire Service Honor Guard performed the “Ringing of the Bell” signifying each fallen firefighter’s “End of Duty.” And tears flowed….
Finally, The Firefighters’ Prayer was read:
When I am called to duty, God,
Wherever flames may rage,
Give me strength to save a life,
Whatever be its age
Help me to embrace a little child,
Before it is too late,
Or save an older person from
The horror of that fate.
Enable me to be alert,
To hear the weakest shout,
And quickly and efficiently
To put the fire out.
I want to fill my calling,
And to give the best in me,
To guard my neighbor and
Protect his property.
And if according to Your Will
I have to lose my life,
Please bless with Your protecting hand
My children and my wife…
