Gov. Steve Sisolak has declared a moratorium on evictions for both residential and commercial renters for the foreseeable future.
Many Nevada residents have been out of work for at least a month and there are few if any job vacancies on the horizon. Governor Sisolak said “This decision was made because this is not the time to put people out on the streets, which will only result in an increased risk of Corona Virus infection and causing greater strain on our health care system.”
The Governor warned landlords against locking tenants out. But he also urged tenants and landlords to reach an agreement within a month or so on how to repay the missing rent. Governor Sisolak made it clear that missing rent would have to be paid to the landlord eventually.
As for those who are living in homes they have purchased, state officials say the state will give delinquent homeowners a three month grace period on mortgage payments with a waiver of late fees to the mortgage holder.
Governor Sisolak’s announcement comes after more than 20 organizations called on the state for help for renters who comprise nearly half of all Nevada households. Advocates contend that the governor has the authority to stop evictions under his emergency powers.
