Carson City Supervisors this week decided to bump up the price of diesel fuel a nickel a gallon effective August 1st. The additional nickel-a-gallon diesel tax was voted thumbs up by the Supervisors on a majority vote seeking funding for street repairs around town. The tax will be collected at the local diesel pumps through December of 2022 for trucks as well as for diesel powered cars.
If the city wants to extend the tax, or push it higher, they’ll have to put the issue on a future election ballot and hope it passes. If the tax extension proposal fails, the Board of Supervisors could resort to issuing municipal bonds to generate revenue to meet street repair needs. Of course using investment bonds makes the costs noticeably higher in the long run.
