When the wind picked up Tuesday afternoon it may have contributed to a wild fire off Emerson and Mark Way, north of I-580.
Just before the fire broke out, powerful winds swept through Carson City blowing trees and throwing a lot of dust and dirt in the air. Firefighters say they have not made a formal finding of what caused the fire, but a consensus seemed to be that power poles in that part of town are getting to be pretty ancient. And it doesn’t take much wind rattling to cause sparks to shoot out the top of the poles and shower down onto dried out sagebrush and other vegetation. At least that was the preliminary assessment. One firefighter told us that NV Energy has some really highly competent power pole replacement crews that can have the old power pole out, and a new one up in two to three hours.
