A mother of six children drowned Saturday evening in the middle of Lake Tahoe while her husband tried frantically to save her. Lake Tahoe Coast Guard reports that a family of 8, 6 kids and two adults, were out on the lake around 7pm, straight out from Zephyr Cove when the mother reportedly fell overboard without a life jacket. The father, wearing a life jacket, dove into the water after her. It’s unclear if the father made contact with the mother, but Tahoe-Douglas Fire-Rescue and Lake Tahoe Coast Guard report that the father was rescued and was suffering from extreme cold. Two hours later the mother’s body was retrieved from in the water, likely succumbing to hypothermia.
The children and their father were returned to shore. More details are expected soon.
