Residents living in the Center Drive and Clearview Drive area who have large lots and big horses, tried to get the Board of Supervisors today to halt plans for a contractor to build smaller homes on smaller lots right across the street from those larger homes. The residents said it’s bad planning to have large lot properties on one side of the road and small lot suburban homes on the other. The residents told the Board of Supervisors it’s bad planning – and even went so far as to claim that the move would be illegal based on the land use laws of the city. They said there should be areas where the houses get gradually bigger or gradually smaller – not big on one side of the street and small on the other. One resident said the city’s master plan doesn’t condone such dramatic shifts in housing densities back to back. One neighbor even went so far as to claim such a move would be illegal under the city’s land use laws.
However…Carson City’s Planning Department said the proposed 24 home subdivision square in the faces of their large lot neighbors is quite legal. However, the large-lot neighbors quickly disagreed and even hinted at seriously questioning the planning department’s position. In the end the Supervisors approved the new subdivision for the 24 homes. We’ll see what happens next.
