It took several hours Thursday morning for the Lyon County Commission to make their decision. On a three to two vote among the commissioners, a proposal to rename Old Dayton Valley Road “President Trump Way” failed. A number of residents, both for and against renaming the road, made some strong points from “We want it to be President Trump Way” because he was President of the United States and he accomplished a lot in his four years as President” to others who decided they want the historic avenue through town called “Old Dayton Valley Road” to remain because it has deep historical meaning to the community. And it would cost a pretty penny to replace the signs to reflect the former President’s time in the White House. Others worried about Dayton students learning about Trump’s bumpy ride in the White House and his role in whipping up a huge crowd that stormed the U.S. Capital Building, killing five people – one a police officer – as well as others being wounded during the onslaught.
As everyone knows those who like the former President have great respect for the Donald Trump while others have quite the opposite opinion. Trump and a number of business affiliates are being investigated by several federal and state agencies that strongly suggest the road ahead for Mr. Trump might be more than a little troublesome.
But for time being, Old Dayton Valley Road will remain Dayton Valley Road. But there could very well emerge a community petition to put the issue on the ballot to get the wide view of how the Dayton Community feels about it.
