The Carson City Planning Commission, on a split vote early this week, gave the green light to a company that wants to build a sizeable farm animal slaughter house on Highway 50 East in Carson City. Trouble is, the slaughter house will be very close to residential neighborhoods and small businesses off Highway 50 not to mention the Empire Ranch Golf Course and the Empire Ranch subdivision. Slaughter houses are usually located a long way out of town where smelly cattle, noise, flies and loud trucks come and go.
The slaughter house company told the planning commission that there won’t be much delivery noise – maybe 65 head of cattle a week to process. And that the slaughter house will be in “air tight” buildings. No outside corrals. But the neighbors aren’t buying it. They’re very upset over the planning commission’s green light given to the developers. It’s quite likely that the planning commission’s decision will be appealed to the Carson City Board of Supervisors. And there’s always the courts.
